Film Opening Research #1 - The Martian

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?

There were 6 titles displayed

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The images that are prioritized in the opening scene are a place looking like mars, a space station, and a group of people that look like professional astronauts.

What connotations do the images carry?

The connotations that the images carry at first confident and courageous. This is because the group of people in the space station look like they're prepared for anything. After a few minutes though, the scene changes to crammed and manic.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

Genre is reinforced through the science fiction that they're experiencing. For example the astronauts are in space/mars. Sci fi features themes of advanced science and technology, and when the team goes out to observe more of mars, it fits with the theme. Since in reality we have never been to mars, the theme fits when the team talk about what's in mars it's advanced science.

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

It establishes an enigma from the outset by making the audience question what could actually be in mars, if it's really possible to survive in mars, and what is the most realistic thing that could happen in mars.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

To show the audience of a usual Sci Fi, the film begins with a view of "mars" and the advanced space station that the team is settled in, it sticks with the advanced theme and creates mystery. It appeals to aspects of the genre and the audience.

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

Technology is used effectively in the opening shot, the shots that it takes are medium close shots to show what the people are doing in the space station. Few minutes after they use camera shake and low angles shots to represent intenseness foreshadowing that something bad might happen next.
